Figure of Speech Song Contest (due Wednesday)

Think of a song (in English) that you love. CAPITALIZE the metaphors and similes. Then explain it.

For example, here is one of my favorites. In this song, life is compared to a highway that we ride on throughout our life. Just like the road turns, so does our life. Actually, the entire song is one extended metaphor about our life's journey.

"Life Is A Highway"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osuhlptx0J8

Whooo umm yeah...
Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind
There's a world outside ev'ry darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore
We won't hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today

[Chorus:]
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

Through all these cities and all these towns
It's in my blood and it's all around
I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road and these are the hands
From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights

Knock me down get back up again
You're in my blood
I'm not a lonely man
There's no load I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors

[Chorus]

Gimme gimme gimme gimme yeah

[Chorus]

There was a distance between you and I (between you and I)
A misunderstanding once
But now we look it in the eye

Ooooo...Yeah!

There ain't no load that I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors

[Chorus: (x3)]
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

  1. One of my favorite song is "Million Years Ago" by Adele
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDMU6C980fI

The whole song represents a feeling of nostalgia. The metaphor,"But that was a million years ago", is the author's painful and decisive acceptance that she has forever exited a chapter of her life. The past is forever in the distance. Moreover, she also compares her own feeling:
"I feel like my life is flashing by"
"It's like they're scared of me"

    MILLION YEARS AGO

I only wanted to have fun
Learning to fly, learning to run
I let my heart decide the way
    When I was young
Deep down I must have always known
    That this would be inevitable
To earn my stripes I'd have to pay
    And bear my soul
I know I'm not the only one
Who regrets the things they've done
Sometimes I just feel it's only me
Who can't stand the reflection that they see
I wish I could live a little more
Look up to the sky, not just the floor
I feel like my life is flashing by
And all I can do is watch and cry
I miss the air, I miss my friends
I miss my mother, I miss it when
Life was a party to be thrown
But that was a million years ago
When I walk around all of the streets
Where I grew up and found my feet
They can't look me in the eye
It's like they're scared of me
I try to think of things to say
Like a joke or a memory
But they don't recognize me now
    In the light of day
I know I'm not the only one
Who regrets the things they've done
Sometimes I just feel it's only me
Who never became who they thought they'd be
I wish I could live a little more
Look up to the sky, not just the floor
I feel like my life is flashing by
And all I can do is watch and cry
I miss the air, I miss my friends
I miss my mother, I miss it when
Life was a party to be thrown
But that was a million years ago
    A million years ago

    1. There are some metaphors in this song (Life was a party to be thrown) but you didn't mention them. Also, "to earn my stripes I'd have to pay." You "earn your stripes" after completing your military service, so she is comparing this part of her life to serving in the military.

The phrase "that was a million years ago" is not a metaphor; it's a HYPERBOLE, which is an exaggeration. But in order for it to be a metaphor, two things must be compared.

I will give you some points, however, for your lovely description of the song!

  2. The grass is always greener on the other side
    Always searching for another high
The grass is always greener on the other side
    Caterpillar to a butterfly

The grass is always greener on the other side
    Always searching for another high
The grass is always greener on the other side
    Caterpillar to a butterfly

    Bye bye butterfly
    Fly away
    Bye bye butterfly
    Fly away

Start exercising and winning got me a six pack
Was eating healthy and did away with the junk
Then I got lazy and started to wanna kick back
My six pack reverted back to a gut
When I'm at the crib I'm mad I'm not at the club lit
When I'm at the club I'm mad I'm not at the crib
I used to be out partying every damn night
Now sometimes I'd rather be with my kids
I got checks gained a lot of respect now everywhere I go they holla my name (Luda!)
But sometimes wish that I was disguised for peace of mind over fortune and fame
    Guess what I'm really saying

The grass is always greener on the other side
    Always searching for another high
The grass is always greener on the other side
    Caterpillar to a butterfly

The grass is always greener on the other side
    Always searching for another high
The grass is always greener on the other side
    Caterpillar to a butterfly

    Bye bye butterfly
    Fly away
    Bye bye butterfly
    Fly away

Last year got the Ferrari that I always wanted
Drove it crazy got sick of it had to trade (Give me my Ac'!)
All my fans convinced me to grow my hair back
Grew it back then started missing my fade
I got hits start trippin' I wasn't underground
Got underground start trippin' I need hits (We outta here!)
When you down and people give you the runaround
But feels great to know who really gives a shit
You cut the grass and the snakes will show
And know your neighbor's fertilizer is fake (Don't let it fool ya!)
We always searching what we never had
Always ignoring what's in front of our face
    We've been conditioned to think

The grass is always greener on the other side
    Always searching for another high
The grass is always greener on the other side
    Caterpillar to a butterfly

The grass is always greener on the other side
    Always searching for another high
The grass is always greener on the other side
    Caterpillar to a butterfly

    Bye bye butterfly
    Fly away
    Bye bye butterfly
    Fly away

    1. Suvo, I don't see any figurative language in this song. The expression "the grass is always greener on the other side" isn't a metaphor. In order to have a metaphor, two things have to be compared. What is being compared here?

  3. 22 – Taylor Swift (in the album “Red”)

Here is one of my favorite song. It mentions about a party of young adults. The title is "22" to insist a special age. It might be a celebration of graduation or a party for single people thanks to some details such as" forget about the deadlines", " forget about the heartbreaks", "everything will be alright if you keep me next to you", " it feels like a perfect night to dress up like hipstes)..

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgFeZr5ptV8
It feels like a perfect night to dress up like hipsters
And make fun of our exes, uh uh uh uh
It feels like a perfect night for breakfast at midnight
To fall in love with strangers uh uh uh uh
    Yeah
We're happy free confused and lonely at the same time
It's miserable and magical oh yeah
Tonight's the night when we forget about the deadlines, it's time uh oh
    I don't know about you but I'm feeling 22
Everything will be alright, if you keep me next to you
You don't know about me, but I bet you want to
Everything will be alright, if we just keep dancing like we're 22, 22
It seems like one of those nights
This place is too crowded, too many cool kids uh uh, uh uh
It seems like one of those nights
We ditch the whole scene and end up dreaming instead of sleeping
    Yeah
We're happy free confused and lonely in the best way
It's miserable and magical oh yeah
Tonight's the night, when we forget about the heartbreaks, it's time uh oh
    I don't know about you but I'm feeling 22
Everything will be alright if you keep me next to you
You don't know about me, but I bet you want to
Everything will be alright if we just keep dancing like we're 22 uh uh ah ah ah 22 uh uh uh
I don't know about you, 22 uh uh 22 uh uh
It feels like one of those nights
    We ditch the whole scene
It feels like one of those nights
    We won't be sleeping
It feels like one of those nights
You look like bad news I gotta have you, I gotta have you ohh, uh, yeah
    I don't know about you but I'm feeling 22
Everything will be alright if you keep me next to you
You don't know about me but I bet you want to
Everything will be alright if we just keep dancing like we're 22 uh uh, 22 uh uoh,
22 uh uh, yeah, 22 uh uhoo, yeah yeah
It feels like one of those nights uh uh

  4. love is a bird , she needs to fly
    Frozen - Madonna
You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be
You're frozen when your heart's not open
You're so consumed with how much you get
You waste your time with hate and regret
You're frozen when your heart's not open
Mmm-mm-mm If I could melt your heart
    Mmm-mm-mm We'd never be apart
    Mmm-mm-mm Give yourself to me
    Mmm-mm-mm You are the key
Now there's no point in placing the blame
And you should know I'd suffer the same
If I lose you' my heart would be broken
Love is a bird' she needs to fly
Let all the hurt inside you die
You're frozen when your heart's not open
Mmm-mm-mm If I could melt your heart
    Mmm-mm-mm We'd never be apart
    Mmm-mm-mm Give yourself to me
    Mmm-mm-mm You are the key
You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be
You're frozen when your heart's not open
Mmm-mm-mm If I could melt your heart
    Mmm-mm-mm We'd never be apart
    Mmm-mm-mm Give yourself to me
    Mmm-mm-mm You are
Mmm-mm-mm If I could melt your heart
    Mmm-mm-mm We'd never be apart
    Mmm-mm-mm Give yourself to me
    Mmm-mm-mm You are the key
If I could melt your heart

  5. this is my favorite song ever. In the lyric , the composer discribed the situation of cociety in west America in early 19th century. Where cowboys and gangster fighted together to conquer new lands. the lyric "cause million way to die" written to explain about this
Alan Jackson – A Million Ways To Die Lyrics
Cowboys and pioneers, come lend your eyes and ears.
I've got the need to testify.
Don't try to fill your nest out in the open west
'Cause there's a million ways to die.

Six bullets in the gut or just a paper cut
... too many ways to quantify.
They'll cut your ankle off to cure a minor cough
'Cause there's a million ways to die.
    [Chorus]

It's a hundred and one in the shade of the sun.
If you fall asleep, you fry.
    [Chorus]

You can live like a saint but there just really ain't
No avoiding a million ways to die.
    [Chorus]

Smallpox and bigger pox, and deadly tomahawks
... or God forbid you steal a pie.
They'll blast you into shards for bein' good at cards.
'Cause there's a million ways to die.

Out on the desert plains it hardly ever rains
And you can hear coyotes cry.
They'll eat you up and then they'll crap you out again
'Cause there's a million ways to die.
    [Chorus]

With a whoosh and a whack there's a knife in your back
'Cause you got a fancy tie...
    [Chorus]

It's a kick in the pants but you don't have a chance
Of escaping a million ways to die.

  6. Stereo Hearts

    MY HEART IS A STEREO.

It beats for you, so listen close

Hear my thoughts in every note

    Make me your radio

Turn me up when you feel low

This melody was meant for you

Just sing along to my stereo

    [Travie McCoy]

If I was just another dusty record on the shelf

Would you blow me off and play me like everybody else

If I asked you to scratch my back, could you manage that

Like it read well, check it Travie, I can handle that

Furthermore, I apologize for any skipping tracks

This the last girl that play me left a couple cracks

I used to used to used to used to, now I'm over that

Cause holding grudges over love is ancient artifacts

If I could only find a note to make you understand

I'd sing it softly in your ears and grab you by the hands

Keep myself inside your head, like your favorite tune

And know my heart is a stereo that only plays for you

    [Chorus]

    MY HEART IS A STEREO.

It beats for you, so listen close

Hear my thoughts in every note

    Make me your radio

Turn me up when you feel low

This melody was meant for you

Just sing along to my stereo

Oh oh oh oh To my stereo

Oh oh oh oh So sing along to my stereo

    [Travie McCoy]

If I was an old school, fifty pound boombox

Would you hold me on your shoulder, wherever you walk

Would you turn my volume up before of the cops

And crank it higher everytime they told you to stop

And all I ask is that you don't get mad at me

When you have to purchase mad D batteries

Appreciate every mixtape your friends make

You never know we come and go like we're on the interstate

I think finally found a note to make you understand

If you can hear it, sing along and take me by the hands

Keep myself inside your head, like your favorite tune

And know my heart is a stereo that only plays for you

    [Chorus]

    MY HEART IS A STEREO.

It beats for you, so listen close

Hear my thoughts in every note

    Make me your radio

Turn me up when you feel low

This melody was meant for you

Just sing along to my stereo

Oh oh oh oh To my stereo

Oh oh oh oh So sing along to my stereo

    [Bridge]

I only pray you never leave me behind

Because good music can be so hard to find

I take your hand and pull it closer to mine

Thought love was dead, but now you're changing my mind

    [Chorus]

    MY HEART IS A STEREO.

It beats for you, so listen close

Hear my thoughts in every note

    Make me your radio

Turn me up when you feel low

This melody was meant for you

Just sing along to my stereo

Oh oh oh oh To my stereo

Oh oh oh oh So sing along to my stereo
